Have you ever thought about starting a tackle shop? When your passion is fishing, who among us has not had this idea creep into their consciousness while shopping for tackle?

The beginning

When I moved to Clearlake Oaks, California, the original intent was to do just that. There was a great guy named Bob who owned a tackle shop on Highway 20 (the main street in the Oaks), and he was planning on retiring, intending to put the shop up for sale. Unfortunately for me, there were two things that were insurmountable in that idea.

The first challenge was that good ol’ Bob wanted the new owner to make payments directly to him, and he would carry the mortgage for 5 years. After the 5 years were up, there would be a balloon payment of an agreed-upon price, and at that time, properties here were almost at their peak value. This was obviously not the deal he made it out to be.

The second hurdle was that I wanted to live on the water, and while the building also had a home on the property, it was simply not big enough and was not on the water.

So, I thought I would work remotely and save up some money, then buy something of my own, something fresh, and start with all new inventory.

In this blog series, I am going to go through all the ups and downs of trying to live my dream and start my own shop from the ground up.

Follow Along as I follow my dream

Before I get started, let me preface this with the fact that I have gone through quite a bit already. Therefore, when I write these posts, the first few will be written in hindsight, reliving what I have gone through so far, including the lessons I have learned along the way.

I will be detailing all of my progress from the start to the first sale, so be sure to check back to join me on this epic journey of starting the tackle shop if you are thinking of doing the same thing.
